Farmers applying the Six Steps to Cassava Weed Management attest to the fact it increases the productivity of cassava and reduces the drudgery of hand weeding. The toolkit was developed after a rigorous and intensive research into the agronomy of cassava, the behaviour of weeds and the safest and most effective herbicides, by the Cassava Weed Management Project (CWMP) and the African Cassava Agronomy Initiative (ACAI) of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
